Cardinal Mazarin was godfather fo Louis XIV, and served as the chief minister. Mazarin taught Louis about kingship. Cardinal Mazarin was unpopular in France, and his polices lead to several years of civil disturbance. Mazarin had to flee form Paris twice. In 1661 Mazarin died, and Louis declared himself his own chief minister.
